Bicycle Disc Brake Rotor Replacement Intervals

Before you start
Disc rotors wear thinner with every braking cycle. Replace them at or before the minimum thickness stamped on the rotor, and inspect them whenever pads are changed.
Rotor thickness, mounting hardware, and torque are safety-critical. A bent, cracked, or below-minimum rotor should not be ridden.

Step-by-step instructions

Find the marked minimum thickness
Read the value stamped or laser-marked on the rotor. Do not assume all rotors use the same limit. If no marking is legible, use the brake maker’s documentation or a shop.

Measure several points on the braking track
Clean the rotor and measure at three or more points around the track, avoiding the swept edge. Use the lowest reading. Replace if the measurement is at or below the stated minimum, or if the surface is badly grooved.

Check for damage and runout
Spin the wheel and watch for side-to-side movement through the caliper. Replace a cracked, heat-discolored, heavily scored, or persistently bent rotor. Do not try to straighten a damaged or thin rotor.

Match the new rotor exactly
Match the mounting standard, diameter, thickness, and brake maker’s approved specification. Changing diameter usually needs a compatible caliper adapter and may not be approved for the frame or fork.

Install, torque, and bed in
Use new hardware where the manufacturer requires it. Tighten six-bolt rotors in a star pattern or a Center Lock ring to the specified torque. Clean the rotor, center the caliper if needed, and bed in pads before a real ride.

Stop the DIY work and book a qualified mechanic if any of these apply.
- The rotor is below minimum thickness, cracked, or heat damaged.
- You need a different rotor size or a new adapter.
- There is persistent rub, vibration, fluid leakage, or reduced braking power.
